Aimed at the novice digital photographer, Microsoft’s Photo Standard 9.0 2004 is a digital image manipulation package that will help you correct badly taken images as well as create amazing projects such as calendars, business cards and more.
All the regular photo correction tools are present including red-eye removal, lighting adjustments and rotate. A really cool feature that is hidden away on a drop-down menu is the ability to crop an image to different pre-set proportions including widescreen, wallet, TV, PDA and even smart phone–ideal if you want to use an image as wallpaper on your compatible mobile phone. If you have batches of images that all require the same fix, the Mini Lab will make it easy to correct them all–simply select the images that need correcting, select the correction tool and let Mini Lab do the rest. If you need help getting started, the video tutorials will guide you through the work area and basics of the photo touchup.
The software is very easy to use and the layout is very straightforward. All the common tasks are displayed down the left side of the screen giving you instant access to effects, formatting tools, image touchup and more. Those interested in creating different types of printed work will love the 1,300 design templates that are included. However, the software does have its limitations; there are no basic drawing tools although you can add shapes, lines and text and there are only 10 filters included compared to the 200plus that can be found in Photo Standard 9.0‘s bigger brother Digital Image Suite 9.0 2004. The standard installation requires 250MB of hard drive space, while full installation (includes sample images and clip art) will take up 550MB.
Overall, Photo Standard 9.0 2004 is an ideal package for someone new to digital photography that wants to do more than just print out their snaps onto glossy paper. The included video tutorials and common tasks menu makes those first tentative steps into digital imaging manipulation seem like a walk in the park. The lack of additional filters may be a turn off for those wanting more than the basic 10, but this is just a small mark on an otherwise blemish-free package. –Martin Snelling
